every time this year heralds 2 occasions, one is my birthday and the other is the digital film fest. obviously, i'm more happy about one than the other.
last year for my birthday, sean took me to see back to the future. it was a packed cinema, filled with kids who grew up in the 80s. i have no doubt that the theatres will once again be crammed with the same crowd of movie-loving nerds. i see that this year the festival is playing all 3 back to the future movies back-to-back.
and like last year, i was totally toying with the idea of playing hooky to take in some blast from the past celluloid. so many good ones to choose from:

terminator - i had a major crush on michael biehn

pulp fiction - i saw this movie 3 times in the theatre. that's what happens when you go with 3 different sets of friends
and who doesn't love john hughes?

16 candles - such a dorktastic movie. my lord, i think jake ryan was every teenage girl's dreamhunk

ferris bueller's day off - i had this movie poster on my bedroom wall. flawless casting with matthew broderick. the 80s kids are still waiting for a ferris sequel and this teaser commercial was NOT it.

robocop - i enjoyed this movie but think that with my then teenage brain, i took it way too seriously. it was so bleak and hard to watch in some places, but that made it all the more delicious when robocop exacts revenge. i think with adult eyes, i may even find myself laughing. like at the part where one of the thugs gets absolutely awashed in toxic waste. skin melting off his frame, he meets a grisly end with a car windshield. it may be time for a re-visit. and sean loves this movie and it may be his turn to pick.
and of course one of my favourite movies (still)...

lost boys - "you'll never grow old, michael. and you will never die. but you must feed." i LOVE this movie. forever young, powerful, beautiful and riding motorcycles. what's not to love? i could even forgive the greased up, hip-popping saxophone player with the kenny g. hair on the boardwalk
and of course, it's playing on my actual birthdate. the festival couldn't have scheduled a better choice.
