christmas comes early

it's an exciting time, filled with possibilities, when you can marry new technology with a traditional art form.

social media and opera - is it a match made in heaven?

i believe it is. i believe it SO much that for the past year, i've been campaigning for the creation of a social media manager position with vancouver opera.

the writing on the wall was as clear as day to me; that it was important for a company to recognize and have this dedicated position whereby that person can focus on utilizing social media tools to further brand awareness and audience engagement.

my boss christopher has been supportive of this from the get go. but because the use of this technology for the workplace is still new, particularly for an industry that has been around for as long as opera has, it's been a bit of an uphill battle.

and not just in my company's case. asides from the obligatory website and facebook, most of the world's opera companies do not engage much with their online audience. so it's no surprise that no one's thought about having a "social media manager" amongst their midst.

but times, they are a-changing...

and i think it was all down to timing. and persuasion. and persistence. and that the management at vancouver opera really are progressive and open to innovation.

so i can get off my soapbox now. today, general director james wright and managing director christopher libby promoted me.

i am vancouver opera's social media manager. officially.
